This piece is decorated with sgraffito petroglyphs made by Gloria Hernandez, a first-generation potter. It is a perfect addition to Southwestern style home decor.
She was born on December 20, 1958, in Colonia Cuauhtémoc Chihuahua México, and arrived in Mata Ortiz Chihuahua in 1975 when she married Gregorio Silveira Ortiz, born July 31, 1955. After learning from his older brother, Rogelio Silveira Ortiz, he teaches Gloria the pottery trade. However, Gloria quickly develops her own style, innovating in designs of animals, spiders, insects, fish, reptiles, birds, human figures, petroglyphs, and intricate geometric drawings that fascinate the viewer's gaze.
Gloria has also been a pillar for the continuation of the ceramic tradition in the town, teaching, among many others, her children Fabiola Silveira Hernández (April 19,977), Gregorio Silveira Hernández (October 21, 1978), Jesús Antonio Silveira Hernández (April 19,982), and Estrella Silveira Hernández (May 13,989). Her granddaughters Lesly Samantha Silveira Hernández (January 18, 2003) and Crisol Garibay Silveira are already part of the third generation of Potters. Together they all continue to sow the seeds of this tradition in the family's youngest members.
Mata Ortiz Pottery is a recreation of the Mogollon pottery style found at the historical sites of Casas Grandes in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. This ancient cultural tradition has traveled to us through the past through archaeological reclamation. Artists today have sought to recapture the beauty of this pottery and have developed that into the Mata Ortiz pottery style. This style looks not just to recreate the aesthetics of the past but to re-establish a bond to a cultural tradition that was almost lost to time. The Paquime pottery style could have been a mystery lost to the vast depths of history and time, but thanks to the work of dedicated artists and artistic researchers, it has been revived in our modern time. Our art gallery specializes in this particular style of pottery. We have pieces for sale from new artists and the established form masters. Our effort as a gallery looks to celebrate this artwork and help educate people about its rich traditions.
