Hand-modeled and decorated with Scarlet macaws with a custom base.
Scarlet macaws (Ara macao) were highly valued in Paquimé for their vibrant red, yellow, and blue feathers, used in ceremonial attire and as trade goods. These tropical birds, native to regions far south of the ancient settlement, were carefully raised in specialized aviaries, showcasing Paquimé’s advanced knowledge of bird husbandry. The presence of scarlet macaws highlights the site’s role as a cultural and economic hub, linking Mesoamerica with the American Southwest through extensive trade networks. Their feathers symbolized prestige and spiritual significance, reflecting the deep influence of Mesoamerican traditions on Paquimé society.
Mata Ortiz pottery is a modern revival of the ancient ceramic traditions of the Casas Grandes region in Chihuahua, Mexico, inspired by the intricate Mogollon and Paquimé pottery styles unearthed at the archaeological site of Paquimé. This extraordinary artistic movement began in the 1970s, led by Juan Quezada, a self-taught artist who meticulously studied ancient pottery shards and techniques to recreate these ancestral works' aesthetic and cultural essence. At the same time, other families, such as the Ortiz and Silveira families, played a significant role in this revival, contributing their unique artistry and techniques to the movement. Today, Mata Ortiz pottery is celebrated for its stunning geometric designs and fine craftsmanship, and innovative adaptations, as artists blend traditional methods with contemporary creativity. At Flor de Barro Gallery, we proudly showcase these exceptional works, honoring the artisans and their dedication to preserving this cultural legacy. More than a recreation, Mata Ortiz pottery represents the revival of a heritage that connects modern artisans with an ancient tradition, standing as a testament to the enduring power of cultural preservation and reinvention through the timeless medium of clay.
